Halisahar is a small town and a municipality under Bijpur police stations of Barrackpore subdivision in North 24 Parganas district in the Indian state of West Bengal. Around 50 km away from the metro city of Kolkata and is well connected by roadways and railways. It has an ideal blend of green with township.

It was formerly known Kumarhata. For centuries Halisahar thrived as a prosperous city with a glorified history earning fame for its port and ship-yard during the rule of the Pala dynasty (750- 1050 AD), trade center during the Senas (1060-1220 AD), a cultural and educational joint during the rules of the Muslims (end of 11th century AD-15th century AD) and later during the British rule. The rich heritage city of Halisahar on the eastern side of the River Hooghly boast of the great son of the soil, saint-poet Ramprasad Sen. While it gave the society persons like Iswar Puri, Sadhak Ramprosad, Rani Rashmoni, it also martyred its son Sri Rajib Lochan Roy at Baharampur Military camp as a soldier of the First war of Independence of India in 1857 and gave birth to one of the greatest revolutionaries Bipin Behari Ganguly during the british rule in India.

The area in and around Halisahar came under the jurisdiction of the Naihati Municipality on 1st March, 1869. Halisahar formed a separate Municipality along with Kanchrapara on 1903 and got its solely separate identity on 1st July, 1917. With a total area of 8.29 km² Halisahar at present serves a population of 1.35 lakhs. Modern industrialization started its march in Halisahar holding hand with the growing up of Jute industries. The first Jute Mill came in the area in 1919-1920. Paper-pulp factory was established here on 1918.
